A little planning goes a long way when your dog is coming along. Use this checklist before your next road trip so you can spend less time stressing and more time enjoying the ride.
Before you leave
- ID tags and microchip: make sure your dog's tag has your current phone number and the microchip info is up to date.
- Vet records: bring a copy of vaccination records, especially if you're crossing state lines or staying at pet-friendly hotels.
- Practice short rides: if your dog isn't used to the car, start with short trips around town.
- Pet-friendly stops: look up hotels, parks, and rest areas along your route that welcome dogs.
In the car
- A car harness or seat belt tether so your dog stays secure.
- A waterproof seat cover to protect your seats from fur, mud, and spills.
- A familiar blanket or toy to help your dog feel at home.
- Towels and wipes for muddy paws.
Food and water
- Enough of your dog's regular food for the whole trip. Switching food on the road can upset their stomach.
- Fresh water and a collapsible bowl for every stop.
- Treats for good behavior.
On the go
- Leash and a spare, plus poop bags.
- Any medications your dog takes.
- A basic pet first-aid kit.
Our top tips
- Feed a light meal a few hours before you leave to help prevent carsickness.
- Stop every 2 to 3 hours for water, a walk, and a bathroom break.
- Never leave your dog alone in a parked car.
