How to Keep Your Dog Safe in the Car

Car rides are some of the best moments you can share with your dog. A few simple habits make every trip safer for your pup and less distracting for you.

1. Keep your dog in the back seat

The front seat is the riskiest spot for a dog. Airbags deploy with enough force to injure a pet, and a dog on your lap or by your side is a serious distraction. The back seat, or a secured crate in the cargo area, is the safest place.

2. Use a harness with a seat belt tether

A loose dog can be thrown forward during a sudden stop. A car harness or a dog seat belt keeps your pup in place. Always attach the tether to a harness, never to a collar, so pressure is spread across the chest and not the neck.

3. Small dogs: try a carrier or booster

Small dogs and cats often feel calmer in an enclosed space. A soft-sided carrier secured with a seat belt keeps them cozy and contained.

4. Heads inside the window

It looks fun, but dust, insects, and debris can hurt your dog's eyes and ears. Crack the window for fresh air instead of opening it all the way.

5. Never leave your dog alone in a parked car

Even on a mild day, the inside of a car heats up fast. If you can't bring your dog with you when you stop, it's better to leave them at home.

6. Plan breaks

On longer drives, stop every 2 to 3 hours for water, a short walk, and a bathroom break. A collapsible travel bowl makes it easy.

7. Protect your seats

A calm dog is a safer dog, and a familiar, comfortable spot helps. A waterproof back seat cover gives your dog a non-slip place to settle and keeps your car clean.

Every dog is different. If your dog gets very anxious or carsick, talk to your veterinarian.
